Naxos in September: Weather, Sea, Wind and Crowds

Naxos in September is, for most people, the best month of the year to be here. Average air temperature sits around 24°C, with daytime highs near 27°C, the sea holds about 23.5°C after a whole summer of sun, the meltemi wind drops from its August peak, and the crowds of July and August thin out week by week. The island stays fully open until the end of October, so nothing is closed yet.

This guide is written from Mikri Vigla, on the southwest coast, where Studios Kontos has hosted September guests since the family opened Kontos Taverna in 1986. It covers weather, wind, sea temperature, what changes on the beach after the August rush, late season kitesurfing, what to pack and when to book.

September weather in Naxos: the numbers

September is the first month of autumn on paper, but on Naxos it behaves like a softer version of June. According to climate data for the island:

• Average temperature: 24°C, with an average maximum of 27°C and an average minimum of 20.9°C.
• Extremes: the warmest days can still reach 30.5°C, usually early in the month, while the coolest nights can drop to 17.5°C towards the end.
• Sunshine: around 9.5 hours a day, with daylight lasting roughly 12.5 hours.
• Rain: about 4 rainy days in the whole month. June to September are the months with the fewest rainy days on the island.
• Humidity: around 73%, similar to the rest of the summer.

Compare that with August, where highs average 30°C and the warmest days hit 33°C. The difference sounds small, but it changes how you spend the day. In September you can wander around Naxos Town, 10 km away, at midday without planning your route around shade, and you can sit on a veranda at 15:00 without retreating indoors.

The meltemi eases, but it does not vanish

The meltemi is the dry north wind that defines Cycladic summers. It peaks in July and August, when average wind speed on Naxos is 28 to 29 kph. In September the monthly average drops to about 23 kph, roughly where it sits in June. That is the honest version: September is calmer than August, not windless.

What this means in practice at Mikri Vigla:

• Early September still delivers a good number of windy days, so kite and windsurf schools are busy and happy.
• By mid and late September the calm days become more frequent, and the open south beach (Sahara) is usable for ordinary swimming and sunbathing far more often than in August.
• The north bay of Mikri Vigla is protected, shallow and calm in any case, which is why families and quiet swimmers head there on the days the wind picks up.

Sea temperature: September is the warmest swimming month after August

The sea is the strongest argument for September. Water warms slowly, so it peaks late. Sea temperature data for Naxos gives an August average of 24.8°C and a September average of 23.5°C, with September ranging between 22.2°C and 24.8°C. October is still swimmable at 21.5°C, but noticeably cooler.

In plain terms, the sea in September is warmer than in June (around 22°C) and very close to August. You can swim early in the morning and again after sunset without hesitation. The shallow north bay in front of the studios warms even more than the open water, which matters if you are travelling with small children or simply prefer a gentle entry.

Crowds: what actually changes after August

August is the busiest and most expensive month on Naxos. Travel guides to the island recommend June or September precisely to avoid the crowds and still get the best temperatures. From our side of the cape, the change is visible:

• First week of September: still lively, many European families finishing their holidays, beaches busy but not packed.
• Second and third week: the shift happens. Couples, kitesurfers, walkers and people without school calendars replace families. Tavernas have free tables at 21:00 without a wait.
• Last ten days: Mikri Vigla feels like a village again. You recognise the same faces on the beach each morning.

Nothing closes in September. Most tourist facilities on Naxos operate from mid-May to the end of October, so the restaurants and cafés 200 m from the studios, the kite stations 100 m away and Kontos Restaurant at 300 m all keep their normal hours.

Why September suits a quiet beach stay in Mikri Vigla

Mikri Vigla is already a quiet corner of Naxos, with no large hotels and two different beaches on either side of a small cape. September amplifies that. The guests who book this month tend to want the same few things: warm sea, long empty mornings, a terrace with a view and dinner within walking distance. A few September specifics worth knowing:

• Sunset moves earlier through the month, so the veranda becomes the natural place to be from about 19:00.
• Evenings are mild, around 21°C, so you will sit outside for dinner every night, but late September nights can reach 17.5°C, so a light layer helps.

Kitesurfing and windsurfing in late season

Mikri Vigla is an internationally known kitesurf and windsurf spot, and the spot is 100 m from the studios. September is a favourite with riders who know the island because the water is at its warmest, the wind is still regular in the first half of the month, and there is more space on the water than in August. Lighter wind days later in the month suit beginners and anyone on a bigger kite.

What to pack for Naxos in September

• Summer clothes for the day: highs of 27°C and 9.5 hours of sunshine mean it is still a beach month. Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses.
• One warm layer: a sweatshirt or light jacket for evenings on the veranda, especially after the 20th.
• Windproof layer: useful on the days the meltemi returns, particularly if you plan to be on the open south beach.
• Swimwear you will use twice a day: the sea is 23.5°C, so plan for more swimming than you expect.
• Walking shoes: September is comfortable enough for inland villages and coastal walks that are punishing in August.
• A small umbrella is optional: four rainy days a month is the average, and showers are usually brief.

When to book a September stay

September is no longer a secret. Guides recommend it openly, and returning guests reserve the same weeks year after year. Our practical advice:

• First half of September: demand is close to August, especially for the Sea Front Bungalow, which is the only unit directly on the beach. Book in winter or early spring.
• Second half: more flexibility, but the smaller units go first. The Superior Double Studio (20-25 m2) and Deluxe One Bedroom Apartment (35-40 m2) are the most requested by couples.
• Families: the Family Apartment (48 m2, two bedrooms) is easier to find after the school year starts in most of Europe, in the second week of September.
